Dear friends of the Hague Appeal for Peace,
Today marks the first anniversary of the Hague Appeal for Peace Conference that took place at The Hague, the Netherlands.
On May 11, 1999, over 10,000 people, including many of you, joined together at the largest peace conference in history to call for peace and justice at the dawn of the new millennium.
Since then, we have managed to see some progress made and great attention paid to many of the areas we highlighted at the Conference. These areas include child soldiers, globalization, the right to self-determination, protection for human rights defenders and peace education.
Our work has created a momentum for a new and renewed peace movement that invites young and old from around the world to join together in calling for the abolition of war and the affirmation of peace as a human right.
The Hague Appeal continues its work by promoting the many campaigns that were launched at the conference and as the coordinator of the Global Campaign for Peace Education. This campaign seeks to introduce peace education into every school at every level in every country around the world.
The governments of Bangladesh, Norway and New Zealand have already embraced our call. Regional contacts in Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Europe and the Pacific are working to bring peace education into their schools and communities.
In the coming months, we hope to work with you and other partners in
developing curricula that will teach peace, justice, disarmament, women's rights, environmental respect and human security to young people around the globe. We hope that the major campaigns launched at the conference will also develop curricula that bring their messages to youth.
Congratulations to us all on one year of work towards the implementation of the Hague Agenda for Peace and Justice for the 21st Century.
Let us hope that in the coming years we will be able to look back on May 1999 as the year that began our journey to a world without war and injustice. Until then, much work lies before us. We look forward to working together with you to bring peace to our world.
In Solidarity,
